Nice looking but poor quality.3

I didn't even have it 9 months before the second hand stopped working it would spin around whenever you would move your arm. That in turn changed the time constantly. It was a complete piece of a junk my cheapo dollar store watch has lasted longer.

Tissot Men's T17.1.526.52 PRC 200 Watch

You are going to love this watch4

I love this watch. As subtle as it appears it does seem to grab attention and I enjoy the dressy-casual paradox it creates. While not pretentious it is definitely bold as one reviewer put it and you should be prepared for strangers asking you what kind of watch it is. I'm not that familiar with Tissot watches so in the way of metrics I would say that it is nicer than a Bulova Marine Star (a solid watch in its own right) but a good step below a TAG Heuer Carrera (but the TAG has an automatic movement).

The strap and chronograph imply "working man's watch." No frou-frou here. But the massiveness precision design and elegant finish tell you it's a little nicer than a simple workhorse timepiece.

One quirk is the layout of the hands and dials. The large yellow "seconds" hand in the central dial location is not the real-time seconds hand but rather that of the chrono; this hand remains perpetually at 12 o'clock (until you start the chronograph). All chrono functions are color-coded with yellow hands which is a thoughtful touch. The real-time seconds are actually marked by a secondary (white) dial at the 6 o'clock position. The casual observer seeing the large stopped hand might think your watch battery has stopped. I have a Lucien Piccard with this setup so I guess I will just get used to it.

The reviewer who complained about the buckle-clasp makes a valid point. In theory these buckle-clasps should work fine. However on my wrist the strap is tight enough to nearly take off skin when I slide it on yet when I clasp it shut it is still too loose to stay in place. I will also look into after-market straps with conventional buckles. There's no good excuse for spending more than ten seconds to put on a wristwatch no matter how nice it looks. But straps come and go so this isn't a huge deal.

Pro:

- Very elegant for a casual watch

- Size mass and depth (the depth of the watch is thicker than a Sharpie-brand marker)

- Good overall design; looks like it could have been designed by an architect

- Internal tachymeter on a beveled ring; allows for a larger crystal and a cleaner look

Con:

- The chronograph "seconds" hand at the home position is slightly off-center against the 12 o'clock tick mark on the watch face indicating a quality control issue at the factory. You would have to look very closely to notice this however.

- The fancy clasp is over-designed and should be replaced with a more effective buckle design.

As a side note I noticed today that Amazon shows the MSRP as $425 however the retail tag attached to the watch I received through Amazon states $395. As of February 2008 the online price is still $273 with free UPS shipping (signature required).More detail ...

Citizen Men's BL8000-03A Eco-Drive Calibre 8700 Watch

Amazing functionality but with some ease of use issues4

A very very precise perpetual solar powered timepiece capable of tracking the time in two zones (you toggle between locations using the crown) pretty thin at a great street price. The hands have nice night time illumination. The leather strap and deployant buckle are pretty plush. Some of the functionality is hard to use and there is a cheap look to the metal bezel (which marks easily; the glass seems tough enough).

This thing is really a time computer instead of a watch; when you change modes the hands change function in such a way that to get back to the time you must be accessing a computer memory. Also it has the cute (really) habit of napping when it has been in the dark for some long time. Then when you look at it it senses light wakes up and the second hand moves madly to catch up.

The crown:

It is way too easy to pull the crown out two stops into the setting mode which could cost you the correct time instead of one stop into the position where you can change modes.

The alarm:

To see what at time the alarm is set you change to the alarm mode and it may take (really) a minute or more while the hands move to show that time (the minute hand actually goes round and round as the hour hand advances ... its a 24 hour alarm which is very nice there's a separate indicator keeping track of 24 hour time). Then the same thing in the other direction when you need

the time again. The alarm is very very dim I would not trust it to wake me up. When the watch is in the calendar mode where the second hand shows the month there is no way to see whether the alarm is on (that hand can only be used to show the number of years to the next leap year ... likewise when it shows whether the alarm is on it can't access that leap-year function).

The second time zone:

Quite easy to use its synched to the main time in hour increments. Just don't go to Teheran or any other place where time isn't on the hour that isn't possible without resetting the main watch time. There's a 2ndary dial which tells you whether the 12 hour hands are pointed to am or pm in either time zone.

And it may take a long time to move to the 2nd time if you need to check that see the comments on checking the alarm time.

bottom line: the gaffes probably stand out more just because the good parts are so good. Its almost a perpetual motion machine!More detail ...

Just loved it!5

It looks stunning on the wrists. It is great too to have "3 watches in one". I personally love having it all red but mixing red and blue looks great too!

And if you have thin wrists dont be afraid: i have VERY VERY thin wrists and i find it very difficult to buy watches because of that. But no problem with this one. It is lovely now i will buy one for my sister too i am sure she will like it!More detail ...

Ludicrously huge5

I didn't pay very close attention when I bought this. I thought the style was cool and that the watch would be a normally sized one (I wasn't paying attention to the specs). To say that I was surprised that it was so huge is an understatement. The heft of it on my wrist is huge - more of a "wristclock" than a "wristwatch". I was so surprised by the hugeness of it that I kept asking my daughter (who is 16) whether I should return it.

After a while though and some wearing I realized that this ludicrously huge watch is also ludicrously nice. It's obviously well-built and definitely has a style that stands out. I certainly will NOT be returning this one!

My advice: If you don't want to attract attention with your watch for God's sake don't buy this watch. However if you want something distinctive that looks like it will last forever this is the watch for you!

Update (40 days later): I still like the look of the watch but the stopwatch feature now resets to two seconds rather than to zero seconds. A little thing I know but it kind of defeats the purpose of a stopwatch to be two seconds off.More detail ...

Great but for the stitching4

Yes it is clean simple elegant etc. After just over a month however the stitching is coming loose -- and I have been very careful really. This cannot be right and perhaps I should deduct more than one star as it's not what you expect from a watch at any price.

So a qualified positive review when it would have been a straightforward excellent.More detail ...

Oris Men's 4154LS BC4 Black Dial Leather Strap Watch

Fantastic Aviator-style watch and relatively good value5

I'm a big fan of Oris so I was very anxious to see this watch in person. Just to get it off my chest this watch is awesome! The quality of the watch is very good with one minor issue which I'll describe below.

The 42mm stainless steel case feels very solid. This is a watch that will last a long time. Although hard to see from the Amazon photo the watch appears to be two pieces of steel bolted together by the four hexagonal bolts visible from the face. However it's not apparent as to whether or not these are functional or just for looks. I didn't want to try and loosen them!! When looking at the watch from the side you see a very round watch. My only negative comment is that the edges of the case seem somewhat sharp. Definitely not sharp enough to cut something but I would have expected a much more chamfered edge. It's minor but noticeable. The see-through case-back shows the well known red rotor and the Oris 645 (modified ETA 2836).

As is on nearly all Oris watches the crown is substantial. This one has a spiral-like etched surface which not only looks nice but allows for an easy grip. The crown doesn't screw down but does features Oris Quick Lock system which I feel is better then the screw-down especially given this is not a diver watch.

The face is incredibly easy to see due to the contrasting colors. The sapphire crystal is slightly domed and has anti-reflective coating on the inside. No doubt it makes the face very easy to see. The partially exposed date ring is an interesting touch. I was concerned that it would be confusing to see the correct date but I didn't have any issues. The small second hand moves very smoothly. I love the pointer day. It's a really great feature. Since the pointer has red marking it's very easy to see what day it is.

Finally the leather strap has a very firm stainless steel clasp. It's very easy to take on/off and resize. The white stitching is the perfect touch as it goes well with the face. There is also a stainless steel bracelet option but it really changes the look of the watch. I think it makes the watch look smaller.

This is a really fantastic watch which I would highly recommend for anyone that's interested in a everyday or weekend sports watch. Oris quality and design is very well demonstrated. If you don't have an Oris watch in your collection this could be the perfect first watch.More detail ...

Citizen Men's BL5250-02L Eco-Drive Perpetual Calendar Chronograph Watch

Fantastic Watch!4

I am what many would call a watch nut and own over 30 ranging from Timex to Rolex. For me to buy a watch there has to be "something there" for me to get excited about. At $240 this is one of the very best buys on a fantastic watch that you can find! I was so impressed with this watch I purchased a second one as a gift for my father in law who by the way was very impressed with the watch himself.

Before getting into all the things I like about this watch I want to point out one of the other reviewers posted a problem with the buckle on his watch having some "points" on it that dug into his wrist and made the watch uncomfortable to wear. This must be a factory defect as this is not the case with either of the two that I purchased. While the watch strap is not usually covered by warranty I know from 1st hand experience that Citizen has a dedicated and friendly customer service department and I believe if he contacts them he will find a new strap coming to him rather quickly. Also as to the strap I have been disappointed somewhat in the past when purchasing a watch and the strap that comes with it is not substantial in length. I have a 7.25 inch wrist and this has not caused me a problem but I would readily notice if someone had a larger wrist they would have to go out and purchase a new and larger strap to be able to wear their new watch. The strap that comes with this citizen will allow someone with a larger wrist than mine to be able to wear this watch with the strap that comes on it. This is very good as I believe the supplied strap is very handsome on this watch.

The BL5250-02L is a marvelous little piece of technology at a very good price! At a suggested retail of $400 I have routinely found the watch at local authorized dealers at around $300. My watch was purchased on line for $240 with free shipping and for an additional $5 you could have "next day" shipping.

This watch comes to you very user friendly right out of the box. Along with the user manual also comes a mini disk that when played will have you understanding all the features time settings and adjustments. You will have your watch set and on your wrist in about 10 minutes. Also if you lose this information you may go to Citizen's web page and pull up the same info on an interactive video.

The Echo Drive models have a power cell in them that is charged by available light so there is no battery change ever! The perpetual calendar allows you to set the watch once and then it recognizes short months along with leap years so there is no further adjustment for that. Also there is a duel time zone feature. I use this for setting the second time zone to address the yearly time change of one hour. Doing this with the simple turn of the dial my watch snaps into Daylight savings time mode and then back with another turn when the time comes to go back. It just does not get easier than that.

The rotating bezel certainly may be used for more than just looks. One of the ways I use mine is when I plug a parking meter. I just rotate the bezel so my minute hand moving toward the marker allows me to quickly see when I need to be back at my car. The alarm function works but it is not very noticeable. I have two Seiko's that have a very audible and piercing sound. In this area I have to say Citizen could improve the watch. However I do notice it if I am awake. I just don't know if it would wake me from a deep sleep.

The finish of the watch is very nice and the strap is very comfortable to wear. The watch while feeling very solid is not as heavy as you may would expect and it wears very nicely on the wrist. The watch is advertised as a "deep blue" face and that is an understatement. For all purposes except in direct sunlight it is black. This does not bother me at all because it looks great and again in direct sunlight it does have a blue hew that looks good also. Besides great function and price another strong point on this watch is the luminosity of the hands and markers. With over 30 watches my Seiko's seem to have a lock on that area but this citizen comes in a very very close second. After being outside all day I can read my watch all night long from my darkened bedroom.

Last but not least this watch comes with a five year warranty and as I stated before Citizen has great customer service.

I have just touched on the many features of this finely made watch and for you that do not like straps and would prefer a bracelet Citizen offers the same watch on a bracelet as model number BL5250-53L. It retails for $500 local price around $400 web price $300.

I rate this watch a solid 4 out of a possible 5 stars. I would have given it 4.5 if the alarm were more noticeable. I am very picky and I did not even rate my Rolex 5 stars. I highly recommend this watch and would but purchase it again. In fact I did when I purchased one for my father in law. If this watch appeals to your eye buy it! Price functions ease of use warranty and customer service is just icing on the cake!More detail ...

Seiko 5 Men's SNK809 Automatic Black Strap Black Dial Watch

Great simple watch5

I bought one of these a couple years ago in Singapore. I love it. It is my staple everyday watch. They are tough and withstand a fair bit of abuse. I wore mine while training and flying aerobatics up to 6Gs. Still works. The movement does tend to be fast some say by 5 to 15 sec per day. My experience is that I notice it is running fast by a few minutes every little while and then I correct it. Not an issue especially since it is an automatic watch. If I go more than a day without wearing or shaking it it stops anyway so who needs longterm accuracy?

I love it. I'm buying a second one in dark green. ...May start a collection.More detail ...
